FAYETTEVILLE — For the third consecutive season, the Richmond women’s soccer team was shutout in the first round of the 4-AA NCHSAA state playoffs.

The Lady Raiders were blanked 4-0 by top seed Terry Sanford Tuesday night and were eliminated from the playoffs. Richmond finishes with an overall record of 6-12-2 on the season.

Terry Sanford led 3-0 at halftime and tacked on one more goal in the second half. The Lady Bulldogs outshot Richmond 19-2 in the victory. In the previous two years, Richmond was defeated 8-0 by East Forsyth last season and blanked 7-0 by New Hanover in 2007.

Despite being held scoreless in the playoffs for the third straight year, Lady Raiders coach Bennie Howard praised the effort of his team against the 17-2-1 Lady Bulldogs.

“I’m very proud of the way the girls performed against a very quality opponent,” Howard said. “We’re going to do some stuff in the offseason to hopefully get better.”
