Motorcycle accident kills Greensboro man

Gerard Armando Decosta, 35, Greensboro, died when his motorcycle struck a highway sign and trees at the intersection of Marks Creek Church Road and Coles Store Road east of Hamlet, the N.C. Highway Patrol said.

He was taken to Sandhills Regional Medical Center after the accident occurred at 4:45 p.m. April 12.

The patrol said he went through the stop sign on Coles Store Road and crossed Marks Creek Church Road straight ahead into the highway sign and struck several trees.

The 1995 Suzuki motorcycle he was riding received $5,000 damage; the highway sign, $100.

The patrol said his estimated traveling speed was 90 mph, and the impact speed was 80 p.m.

Five people were injured at 4:30 a.m. April 5 on Airport Road when the sport utility vehicle in which they were riding overturned, the patrol said.

The driver, Derrick Wayne Ratliff, 33, Collins Church Road, Rockingham, and Joy Ratliff, 27, were both taken to FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital.

Passengers Jackie Le Von Bloomfield, 41, Stokes Road, Rockingham; Melvin Martin, 30, McArthur Street, Hamlet; and Courtney Johnson, 19, Collins Church Road, were all taken to Sandhills Regional Medical Center.

Derrick Ratliff was cited by the patrol for exceeding a safe speed at 70 mph in a 55 mph speed zone.

The patrol said the vehicle left the roadway coming out of a curve, lost control, struck trees and overturned.

The 1993 Jeep he was driving received $10,000 damage.

At 3:40 p.m. April 16 on Haywood Parker Road, Ellerbe, Horacio Zamora, 27, Nelson Farm Road, Rockingham, was injured in an accident and taken to FHRMH.

The patrol said the truck he was driving ran off the right side of the road and struck a mailbox and newspaper box, re-entered the roadway, overturned and ran off the road to the left.

Zamora was cited for failure to maintain lane control.

The 1995 Chevrolet truck he was driving received $10,000 damage; the yard involved, $350; the boxes, $50.
