Richmond’s Ricky Holden delivers a pitch to a Durham Jordan batter Wednesday afternoon. Holden allowed only one hit in a 10-0 victory.
Sometimes it takes a young pitcher a little longer to understand they don’t have to strikeout every batter to be dominating.

Richmond’s Ricky Holden learned that lesson as he shutout Durham Jordan on one hit over five innings in the Raiders’ 10-0 win Wednesday afternoon, snapping the Raiders’ two-game losing skid.

“After the Scotland game, we (the coaching staff) talked to him about being more composed while pitching,” Richmond coach Jason Norton said. “Ricky’s composure was very good today. He did a great job of hitting his spots well and he didn’t throw a lot of pitches. Everything was great today.”

Holden allowed just three baserunners on the day and only one reached third. The Falcons (9-5) threatened in the third inning after Holden issued one of his two walks in the contest. After a sacrifice bunt moved Jordan’s Lewis Bass to second, Holden coaxed Alex Raburn to fly out. DJ Elliker dropped down a bunt single to put runners on the corners with two outs. Holden escaped after getting Robert Hubbard to ground out to end the inning.

Holden admitted he was trying to strike out every batter in his last appearance and worked on getting the ball over the plate against Jordan.

“Against Scotland, I tried to overthrow the ball,” Holden said. “I got the team in trouble with a lot of walks. I just tried to throw strikes today. We have a great defense and I just have to let them make plays.”

Richmond (11-5) took advantage of two throwing errors by Jordan’s starting pitcher Zach Bernard to score five unearned runs.

In the bottom of the second, Mike Nichols led off with a base on balls. Nichols moved around to third when Bernard’s pickoff attempt bounced into right field. After a strikeout, Holden was hit by a pitch. Jeremy Outen put down a suicide squeeze bunt to plate Nichols. On the play, Outen reached first safely when Bernard’s throw to first again sailed into right field as Hunter Floyd, running for Holden, advanced to third.

As the play continued, Outen was caught in a rundown between first and second, allowing Floyd to try and score. The throw to the plate arrived in time for catcher Stefan Sundseth to apply the tag, but Sundseth dropped the ball for an error. After another strikeout, Aaron Snead walked to keep the inning alive. Brent Franklin cleared the bases with a two-run double to give Richmond a 4-0 lead.

The Raiders added a lone run in the fifth, again courtesy of an error by Bernard on an attempted pickoff. The error allowed Davenport, who walked to lead off the inning, to move to third and score on Sid Steen’s sacrifice fly.

“Early on we wanted to score a run or two because if you give Ricky a lead it’s going to be huge,” Norton said. “We want to put the pressure on the other team’s defense to make plays.”

Richmond closed out the game with two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth, highlighted by Nichols’ solo home run over the center field fence leading off.

“After the Jack Britt loss, I told them to get away from baseball for two days,” Norton said. “When they came back Monday, I told them if they were tired of losing they would find a way to win. I guess they got tired of losing.”

The Raiders return to action 7 p.m. Tuesday when they play host to Westover in a Mid-Southeastern Conference game.
