Flight over Richmond County and where to land in the early days will be the topic of the meeting of the Richmond County Historical Society at 7 p.m. Monday, Rockingham City Hall, Rockingham Road, Rockingham.
The public and members attending will be asked to participate in discussions sharing memories of the two known airports in the county.
The History of Aviation in Richmond County will explore airports in the county and a county connection with the ill-fated German dirigible Hindenburg.
Giving the presentation will be T. K. Thrower III, who has a diary of the early days of the first airport; Dr. Wingate Williamson, who watched the present airport being constructed; and Doyle Haigler.
Haigler, who is the present manager of the airport, will tell of recent improvements and plans for the future.
The county is now advertising to sell the old hangars at the airport which have been replaced with new ones.
A question to be answered during the meeting: What was the name of Airport Road before the present airport was constructed there?
Plaque in place
A bronze plaque telling about the 1891 Rockingham Seaboard Depot was recently placed on the exterior of the building.
The depot was built by Carolina Central Railroad and in 1914 was remodeled by Seaboard Air Line Railway. It was moved Oct. 23, 2003, from Caroline Street beside the CSX Transportation railroad tracks to its present location at the intersection of U.S. 1 and 74 Business, downtown Rockingham.
Its restoration and renovation was a project of the Richmond County Historical Society funded by the N.C. Department of Transportation, the City of Rockingham and the Cole Foundation.
The Richmond County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Authority recently moved into the building. The building was dedicated at the new location April 17, 2007.
The present depot committee members besides Deane are Neal Cadieu and Ed Snyder.
