Virginia Davis, 88, of Rockingham passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at Britthaven of Hamlet. She was born April 12, 1920 in Richmond County, a daughter of the late Alfred and Jennie Thomas Davis. Virginia joined Pee Dee Baptist Church at the age of fourteen and faithfully supported it until her failing health. She remained the oldest member of the church until her death. She took care of and maintained a home for her brothers and sisters after their mother died. Virginia felt a strong responsibility for her siblings and in return graciously catered to their every need.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Watson-King Funeral Home Chapel in Rockingham with Rev. Lester English officiating. Burial will follow at Northam Cemetery.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sisters, Annie Hanselman and Ferol D. Jarrell, and brothers, John William “Bill” Davis and Robert F. “Mopey” Davis.
Surviving are her sisters, Elsie D. Allen, Peggy D. Warren, and Carol D. Norton all of Rockingham; brothers, Alfred Davis, James M. “Jimmy” Davis, and Harold D. “Bucky” Davis all of Rockingham; and special nieces and nephews. Virginia’s niece, Jennifer, was the first to form a strong bond with her and she became “Grandma”, to her niece, Amy. Virginia’s great nieces and nephews were just as special. To Ashley and Zach she was “Grandma Gigi”, and to Adam and Abigail she was simply “Gigi”.
The family will receive friends Friday, April 10, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Watson-King Funeral Home in Rockingham.
The family would to thank the staff of Britthaven. “Gigi” quickly became a beloved part of the Britthaven family. The family would also like thank the staff of Richmond County Hospice; “Miss Virginia” was well taken care of by her Hospice team.
