Recent accidents injure eleven in area

Eleven people were injured recently in five motor vehicle accidents in Richmond County, the N.C. Highway Patrol said.

At 2:56 p.m. March 24 on Rural Paved Road 1403, three people were taken to FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital following a rear-end collision.

They were Alyssia Field, 1; and Enka Covington, 35, Mill Road, Rockingham, who were passengers in a vehicle driven by Melissa Field, 20, Whitlock Drive, Hamlet.

Their vehicle was struck from behind by one driven by Christopher Andrew Swails of Minturn Avenue, Hamlet, the patrol said.

Swails was cited for failure to reduce speed. The 1996 Honda driven by Field received $3,000 damage; the 1998 Ford driven by Swails, $2,000.

At 1:05 a.m. March 26 on Battley Dairy Road, Hamlet, a truck driven by Brenson Allen Jordan, 26, Country Canyon Lane, Rockingham, went off the roadway, struck a utility pole, overturned and collided with a tree, the patrol said.

He was taken to Sandhills Regional Medical Center.

The patrol charged him with being “impaired on some form of medication.” His 2000 Chevrolet received $5,000 damage.

At 4:35 p.m. March 27 on Rural Paved Road 1903, four people were taken to hospitals following a three-car, rear-end collision, the patrol said.

Betty Yates Short, 64, North Beaunit Avenue, Rockingham, was taken to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital. Two of her passengers, Cynthia Briggs, 35; and Casey Briggs, 6, both of North Bonnet Street, Rockingham, were both taken to FHRMH.

From another vehicle, Donna Lynn Gainey, 30, Broadleaf Drive, Hamlet, was taken to FHRMH.

Christopher Gage Hinson of Airport Road driving the third vehicle involved was cited for failure to reduce speed.

The 1998 Chevrolet driven by Hinson received $5,000 damage; Gainey’s 1998 Ford received $4,000 damage, and the 2004 Mercury driven by Short received $2,000 damage.

At 11:25 a.m. March 28 on Airport Road, Rockingham, two people were injured when their car left the roadway, struck a ditch culvert, sending the vehicle airborne, the patrol said, and continued out of control, struck a fence pole, overturned ejecting the passenger and came to rest in a ditch.

The driver, Gary Dean Selph, 58; and passenger, Michael Alexander Lecroy, 13, both of Rohanen Avenue, Rockingham, were taken to FHRMH.

Selph’s 2003 Dodge received $12,000 damage.

At 12:45 p.m. March 29 on Millstone Road, Gary Dell James Jr., Anne Street, Hamlet, was operating a motorcycle when it ran off the road, skidded out of control, the patrol said, and overturned.

James was taken to SRMC.

He was cited for a lane control violation and motorcycle endorsement violation.

His 2009 Honda received $6,000 damage.
