The Richmond County Historical Society met this week to hear from the director of Discovery Place KIDS-Rockingham, Katie Rohleder, about the newly opened interactive learning museum for children.
“This is one of the most exciting things ever established in this area for children,” read the society’s newsletter. “It is an ever-changing cycle of activities to expand their minds and bodies. It has daily activities such as story-time, science shows, puppet shows and other activities.”
Rohleder’s presentation showed how stationary parts of the facility engage children in a variety of activities. The presentation also covered how and why Rockingham was selected and by whom.
In other news, the society:
• Considered the possibility of obtaining and preserving an American LaFrance “convertible” fire truck from circa 1920, which is now under a shed at the Hamlet Fire and Rescue Headquarters in Hamlet. The society already has one antique fire truck.
• Received a report on several repairs needed at the Bostick Schoolhouse, which was once maintained by the late Woodford Sherrill. Neal Cadieu is in the process of finding someone to make repairs and check on any possible termite damage.
• Learned that Camp Mackall History book sales increased in February because of four programs in Moore County sponsored by the Southern Pines Civic Club and Moore County Historical Society, which assisted in book sales. Tom and May MacCallum presented part of a Camp Mackall program on behalf of the society.
• Announced a donation to the society made by Cooper McLaurin of a large framed drawing by Julian Borroughs of the old Rockingham High School. Pictured around the building facade are sketches of Coach Fant Kelly, Principal Kate Finley and Margaret Garrett, 12th grade English teacher. It now hands on the wall of the second floor of the Leak-Wall House.
• Heard that a large collection of genealogy material loaned to the Genealogy Committee is being copied for research files and will be returned. It is the personal collection of the late Brama Covington Tarleton and relates to her time in Rockingham.
• Took a poll of what the society is to pursue in the future.
