Not only will the Rockingham Speedway be home to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series North Carolina Education Lottery 200 at The Rock presented by Cheerwine on April 14, the Rock will also hold Richmond County’s Relay for Life on May 3.
Normally held at the Richmond Senior High School football stadium, the event had to relocate because the high school track was resurfaced.
“While all of the logistics are still being worked out, we think the change of venue may actually re-energize this worthy cause. Everyone has or will be affected by cancer as some point in their lives,” said Linda Bayless, co-chair of the Richmond County Relay for Life Committee.
Bayless said she hopes the change will be positive. “We’ll have room for all our teams … ,” she said.
The event will begin at 6 p.m. and end at midnight, and the last day to register is April 2. The theme for this year’s event is “Racing at the Rock for a cure” and each team is asked to decorate their tents with this theme in mind, said Bayless.
At the first team captains meeting this year, held the first Tuesday of each month at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital, Cameron Quick Whitley, American Cancer Society community manager for this division, gave awards to the top teams of 2012.
Cascades Industries of Rockingham came in first place and raised more than $14,000; Sandhills Regional Medical Center came in second place and raised more than $10,000; and the Independents came in third place and raised more than $5,000.
Other events for Relay for Life include the “4 A Cure” 5K Run which will be at 8 a.m. on April 20 and the Survivors Breakfast. Registration for the 5K Run is $25 and the deadline is April 9. Each participant will receive a T-shirt and a medal.
The Survivors Breakfast will be held on April 27 at the Lions Club Building in Hamlet. The free breakfast starts at 9:30 a.m. and survivors can bring one guest.
