ROCKINGHAM — During warm-ups, Richmond Senior coach Bennie Howard feared his team was going though the motions and not ready to play.
Richmond shrugged off a relatively slow start and rolled to its second straight 9-0 victory over Marlboro County Monday night at Raider Stadium. The Raiders defeated the Bulldogs by the same score last Wednesday.
“We were very lackadaisical in the first half,” Howard said. “I’m glad we were able to get a win and play a lot of people because that will benefit us later in the year.”
Eight Raiders cracked the scoring column led by Cherie Ellerbe, who netted two goals. Goalkeeper Brittni Faurot recorded the shutout and wasn’t forced to make a save in the contest.
Senior defender Holly Hudson agreed with her coach that she and her teammates were sluggish in the opening 40 minutes.
“It was tough not to play down to their level,” Hudson said. “We knew we weren’t playing a team like Pinecrest. So you go into the game thinking ‘You got this, you got this.’ It would have been good to have played another team in between.”
Richmond (3-2, 0-1) will return to action 7 p.m. Wednesday when it plays host to Southeastern Conference foe Hoke County.
“We can now turn our attention to Hoke,” Howard said. “We can’t afford to go 0-2 in the conference.”
Hudson added she knows the Raiders can’t come out and play like they did against the Bulldogs in their match with the Bucks.
“We can’t be lackadaisical,” Hudson said. “Hoke doesn’t play around.”
Raiders extend hot streak
WADESBORO — James Buie earned his third pitching victory of the spring and added two hits as the Richmond Senior baseball team rolled to a 13-3 victory over Anson Monday night.
The win was the fifth straight for the Raiders following their opening season loss to Terry Sanford.
Buie allowed four hits and a run over four innings to improve to 3-0 this season. Brandon Gibson pitched the final three innings, surrendering three hits and two unearned runs.
“It’s gonna be a long week with four games, so it was good to be able to play almost everyone today and get a win,” Richmond coach Ricky Young said.
Matt Pettit had three hits for the Raiders (5-1). Taylor McLean and Ethan Baucom each added two hits.
Richmond will return to the diamond Wednesday when Union Pines visits Raider Field.
Richmond falls in tennis
BISCOE — East Montgomery handed the Richmond Senior boys tennis team its first loss of the season, 6-3, Monday afternoon.
Brandon Ingram earned the Raiders’ only singles victory, downing Taylor Furr 6-4, 2-6, 7-2 at No. 4.
Richmond captured two of the three doubles contests as Andrew Balzer teamed with Ingram to knock off Chris Stuart and Furr, 9-8 (9-7). Colt Auman and John Pittman stopped Javier Depaz and Connor Kellis, 8-4.
The Raiders will return to Southeastern Conference action 4 p.m. today when they travel to Pembroke to face Purnell Swett.
Raiders take 3rd in season opener
RAEFORD — The Richmond Senior boys golf team finished with a 326 score to edge Purnell Swett for third in the first match of the season Monday afternoon at Bayonet at Puppy Creek.
Matt Howard carded a 78 to lead the way for the Raiders. Tyler Kirk notched an 80, Jordan Buie fired an 83 and Caleb Neeley and Chris McDonald each shot an 85. Jordan McDonald and Rob Player finished with an 89 and 92, respectively.
Pinecrest won the event with a team total of 283, 38 shots better than Scotland. Lumberton was fifth and Hoke County came in sixth.
“I am very pleased with our result,” Richmond coach Ray Entwistle said. “We are a young team, we have two seniors and a junior and the rest of sophomores and freshman. I am hoping we keep improving and move up.”
Richmond will return to action 2 p.m. Monday in another Southeastern Conference match at Pinehurst No. 5.
Anson slides past Richmond
WADESBORO — The Anson softball team knocked off Richmond 4-2 Monday afternoon.
The loss drops the Raiders to 3-2 on the season.
Richmond will return to action 5 p.m. Wednesday when it plays host to Jack Britt. Earlier this season, the Buccaneers defeated the Raiders 8-2.
RSHS boys track team places sixth
WEDDINGTON — The Richmond Senior boys track team placed sixth out of 19 teams at the Weddington High Invitational meet Saturday.
Jordan Richardson took first place in the shot put and third in the discus. The 4x100 relay team of Gus Chambers, Kenneth Hester Devontae Watkins and Travis Newton finished second. The 4x400 relay squad made up of Tafari Rose, Trent Green, Sean Thompson and Erren Green took third. The sprint medley team of Hester, Watkins, Green and Travis Newton was fourth.
