ROCKINGHAM — Richmond coach Bennie Howard thought his team might be able to squeeze out a tie after cutting the lead to one early in the second half against Jack Britt.

Instead, the Buccaneers responded with three straight goals to pull away for a 5-1 nonconference victory Friday night at Raider Stadium.

“When we cut it to 2-1, I thought we could get another one,” Howard said. “When they made it 3-1, I still thought we could score again. But when they made it 4-1, we hung our heads a little bit.”

Alexie Coble scored in her second straight contest for the Raiders (1-1). Against Forest Hills in the season opener Thursday, Coble had two goals.

Despite the loss, Howard was pleased with his team’s ability to keep the game close until the final 18 minutes of the game.

“I don’t think the score was any indicator of how well we played tonight,” Howard said. “We made some young mistakes, but those can be corrected.

“I told the girls what we learned tonight will benefit us later in the season. I hate we lost, but I think it will work out well for us in the end.”

Richmond will return to the field 7 p.m. Monday against Southeastern Conference foe Pinecrest at Raider Stadium. The game was moved to the early part of the schedule because the Patriots will be on Spring Break on March 25, the date of the original contest.

In the junior varsity game, Jack Britt downed Richmond 4-0.
