ROCKINGHAM — It didn’t take long for Richmond Senior to take control in its season opener.

Brittney McDonald scored off a deflection at the 8-minute mark and Alexie Coble added the first of her two goals nearly six minutes later to lead Richmond to an 8-1 victory over Forest Hills Thursday night at Raider Stadium.

“It’s always good to start the season on a high note,” Richmond coach Bennie Howard said. “We were able to play everyone tonight and different people scored. It is going to be a lot different against Jack Britt tomorrow night.”

Lashonda York recorded three straight goals for the Raiders. York scored the final tally of the first half and added two more in the opener eight minutes of the second. Cherie Ellerbe and Nile Fisher each had a goal in the victory.

Brittni Faurot and Kevyna Stanback had their combined shutout bid dashed when Forest Hill’s Cynthia Sierra scored at the 10-minute mark of the second half.

“If we can emulate same of the things we did tonight against Jack Britt, you never know,” Howard said. “We will have to play mistake-free tomorrow night.”

The Raiders (1-0) will return to the field 7 p.m. today at home against the Buccaneers. The contest was originally slated for Hope Mills, but poor field conditions at Jack Britt following this week’s rain forced the change in venue.

HOPE MILLS — Jack Britt recorded 10 hits and took advantage of four Richmond Senior errors to post an 8-2 victory Thursday afternoon.

Hunter Parks surrendered 10 hits, four walks, two hit batters in a complete game for Richmond. Of the eight Jack Britt runs, only three were earned.

Richmond will return to action 2 p.m. Saturday at home against Eastern Randolph.
