OAKBORO — Richmond Senior defensive coordinator James Johnson dipped his toes in the head coaching job pool this winter looking for the right place.
He has apparently found it.
Johnson accepted the head coaching position at West Stanly this week. Earlier this year, Johnson interviewed at Fairmont, Lumberton and Southern Lee. Johnson’s hiring should become official at the Stanly County Board of Education’s next meeting, which is scheduled for March 5.
Johnson denied to comment about accepting the job until his hiring is confirmed.
The Colts were winless in 11 games last season under Jared Bennett, who resigned after one season. West Stanly is 46-63 over the last nine seasons.
Johnson, who was on the Richmond football staff for 10 years, the last five as defensive coordinator, is expected to remain at the school as a PE teacher until his contract at West Stanly is finalized.
Richmond coach Paul Hoggard said the search for Johnson’s replacement is ongoing and he is interested “to see what is available.”
