Legal Aid of North Carolina, Inc. is offering a free legal intake day on Wednesday, Jan. 9, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Dobbins Heights Town Hall in Hamlet.

A similar Intake Day is set for 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan.23, at Ellerbe Town Hall, 108 W. Page St., Ellerbe.

Meghan Melo, a staff attorney for Richmond County, said it will be an open house for people to come in and ask questions.

The types of cases that will be accepted are housing evictions, foreclosures, landlord issues, consumer issues, domestic violence, unemployment, medicaid disability denials and other public benefits denials, testamentary wills, power of attorney, health care power of attorney, and living wills.

Either Melo or Kaitlyn Girard, also a staff attorney, will be there to take questions. Both have been practicing law since September 2012.

If people need additional help, they can schedule an interview with Melo or Girard to conduct a more thorough interview.

The legal aid intake day will be free but there will be income restrictions for individuals who need additional legal assistance. Although appointments are not required, they are recommended, and walk-ins will be seen depending upon the availability of the lawyer.

Legal Aid of North Carolina is a statewide nonprofit law firm that provides free legal services in civil matters to low-income people.
