The young driver involved in the Nov. 27 one-car crash on Aslington Street in Rockingham, that claimed the life of a Rockingham teenager, now faces charges stemming from the wreck, according to an arrest report released Friday.
The crash claimed the life of Allison Butler, 17, of Rockingham.
Mikayla Boone, 17, was driving the car, according to the Rockingham Police Department.
Police said Boone was speeding and driving without a valid license.
The accident report said that “as the vehicle neared the residence of 135 Aslington St. it left the roadway to the vehicle’s right towards a dirt embankment. Traveling downhill on this dirt embankment caused the vehicle to tilt to the driver’s side. When the vehicle struck into the embankment the rear of the vehicle spun around towards the driver’s side and struck the roadway. This caused the vehicle to flip sideways from the driver’s side landing nearly perpendicular to the roadway on its passenger’s side. The vehicle then continued rolling two more times and came to an uncontrolled stop, top side up on its wheels in the roadway facing approximately north. The vehicle’s passenger a Victoria Allison Butler was ejected from the front right passenger seat of the vehicle. Ms. Butler same to rest near the southern edge of the roadway further southwest down Aslington St. Ms. Butler acquired injuries that caused her to pass away later that same evening at Firsthealth Richmond Memorial Hospital in Rockingham N.C.”
The accident report said that Boone was driving above the posted speed limit. She was driving 35 mph in a 25 mph speed zone. Boone hit the embankment without slowing down, the report said.
In the days following the crash, Rockingham Police Chief Billy Kelly said, “It is clear that they were on Aslington Street, coming back towards town. Road conditions, speed and failure to wear seat-belts all contributed to it. At this point in the investigation, it does not appear that intoxication played a role.”
Boone has been charged with one count of death by vehicle and one count of driving while licensed revoked, the report said. Both charges are misdemeanors.
The report said Boone was arrested on Friday at 1:35 p.m. and was taken to the Richmond County Jail. A $2,500 secured bond was set in the case, the report said.
The case is set to be heard in District Court on Jan. 24, 2013.
A memorial has been placed at the spot of the crash. While spray paint from accident investigators still marks the pavement, a wooden cross adorned with bright flowers and a yellow bow stands as a reminder to passing motorists of Allison Butler and the fatal crash. Some of the flowers in the collection have wilted and died because of the passage of time, while artificial flowers at the memorial appear vibrant and new.
