County locals gathered Sunday in the halls of the former Richmond County Courthouse in Rockingham for a special prayer service.

Service was intended to be held on the outside of the courthouse, but rain led the people to proceed inside.

The service attracted more than 100 people and was originally planned in remembrance of families and victims that suffered through recent tragedies locally, including a series of traffic crashes.

Unfortunately, another monumental tragedy took place Friday, with the deaths of the children and school staff in Newtown, Connecticut.

“This prayer service was planned before the school shooting in Connecticut,” said Cathy Wilson. “I had this on my mind for weeks with all the accidents and untimely deaths we’ve had recently.”

Logan McKenzie kicked off the ceremony by singing “Oh What A Savior.” The song was then followed by two very powerful prayers by Pastor Ernie Walters and Pastor Robbie Stewart. Both of them laid their hearts out before God praying for Richmond County and for the victims and families in Newtown, according to event organizers. It was a powerful service and many people were touched, they said.

Many people brought their young children and held them tight as they remembered how fragile and fleeting life is, Wilson said.

“Although it was raining we still had a good crowd,” said Wilson. “As one attendee said, ‘surely we can endure a little rain if those children went through what happened to them.’”
