Could happen here very quickly

Dear Editor,

I would like to tell everyone how easy it is to walk into our schools after what happened in Newtown.

I am a grandfather with two children in this school system. I have had to pick them up in the past. I had to go to the Hamlet 7th and 8th grade building once to pick up one and I just walked in the front door without anyone asking who I was. I walked in the 9th grade academy and could have went anywhere I wanted.

I was raised in this county and I love it very much, but I also know what happened in Newtown could happen here very quickly.

Almost everyone I know owns at least one gun of some kind. This county has a lot of hunters and some, if not most, own some kind of semi-automatic weapon.

I was very touched by what happened in Newtown and I do not want us to have anything like that happen in this county or anywhere else.

Concerned grandparent,

Craig Stroud

It's true that a person can go into a school in Richmond county and not be asked for ID and check to see if you are on a pick up list for a child. I was involved enought in my son's school life for the office and staff members knew me, and if I needed someone to get my son when no one on the list could get him, Id call the school and inform them of who was geting him and their relationship thim. And when my son would enter into a new school, like ninth grade academy, they do require a photo ID, and I always take mine in and give it to them. Take some responsibility for the safely of your children and dont rely solely on the staff to have to ask you for your ID. Parenting 101!

I agree. I have 2 boys at hamlet middle. I have been in several schools here in richmond county.I have Walked in. The schools no one. Would be in the office . Teachers would walk by me never say a word. Something needs to be done to make our schools more safe. If the school system can come up with the awsome uniform rules.and waist time manageing that .I'm sure the can come up with a way to potect our kids and staff in our schools. My heart goes out to the families in Newtown .. come on richmond county. Figure out away it could have been our kids and famlies .and it still could happen to us....thanks
