Richmond, Anson, Cleveland and Montgomery counties are now part of Komen Charlotte’s service area, Executive Director Lori Vaccaro announced Thursday. The expansion brings the number of counties served by the Affiliate to 13, and provides breast health information, mammograms and related services to underinsured and uninsured women and men.

“Residents of our four new counties have been requesting Komen services,” Vacarro explained, “and now we’ll be able to meet their needs.”

Komen board of directors at both local and national levels approved the expansion earlier in the month, she said.

The Affiliate operates by awarding grants to nonprofit organizations such as hospitals and health departments that perform screening services. Nonprofits in the newly served counties are eligible to apply for 2013-2014 grants, Vaccaro explained, “but residents needing our services can call immediately and they’ll be referred to organizations in nearby counties that have Komen Charlotte funding.”

The person to call is Sarah Bailey, director of Community Outreach, at 704-817-4078.

Vaccaro also announced that 2012 Race for the Cure raised more than $1.4 million. Since the first race in 1997, Komen Charlotte has raised approximately $23.4 million to serve its target population. Seventy-five percent of the organization’s net income provides education, screening and treatment in the local service area; 25 percent supports breast cancer research.

The other nine counties served are Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Stanly and Union counties in N.C, and York in S.C.
