Velvert Lee “Bubba” Williams, 72, died on Friday, Nov. 23, 2012.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor J.L. McCullers and Reverend Michael Patrick officiating. Interment will follow, at the Gibson Family Cemetery, Hamlet.

Public viewing will be held Wednesday , Nov. 28, from 1 to 6 p.m. at 302 Bridges St., Hamlet.

Williams was born on Oct. 3, 1940, to the late Cleveland and Irene Williams. He graduated from Monroe Avenue High School in 1961. Williams joined the U.S. Army and later joined the U.S. Marines Corps. He served his country honorably for 26 years and retired as a Master Sergeant. Williams was employed for 10 years by the N.C. Department of Corrections, as a Program Assistant II Counselor. He was a member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Hamlet. Williams is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Mary Carter, and brother, Cleveland Williams Jr.

He is survived by a wife of 25 years, Lillie Irene Gibson of Hamlet; six daughters, Lessie Williams of Hamlet; JoAnne Greene of Norfolk, Va.; Crystal Butler, Meloney Scott, Carmel Johnson, Robin McCray, and one son, Mannix McCray all of Hamlet; one sister, Linda Williams of Norfolk, Va.; 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, along with a host of other family and friends.

Nelson Funeral Home of Hamlet, is assisting the family.
