FAYETTEVILLE — Trailing by seven and facing a fourth-and-15 at the Jack Britt 17 with less than three minutes to play, everyone in the stadium knew Hoke County wanted to get the ball to Detrez Newsome.
As did Buccaneer linebacker Javon Williams.
Williams knocked away Geoffrey Thompson’s pass to the Bucks’ running back to seal Jack Britt’s 17-10 victory and set up a date with Richmond Senior in the finals of the 4AA Mideast pod. The Bucks finish their season with a 10-3 record.
“It was big,” Hoke coach Milton Butts said to the Fayetteville Observer. “Big opportunities. We were down there twice in the first half and only got three points. We knew it was going to be a tough game. It’s hard to win when you’re playing a good team and you’re doing that.”
Newsome was held to a season-low 30 yards on 10 carries, but did score on a 90-yard punt return in the second quarter.
Jack Britt quarterback Mark McRae was 13-for-20 on the night for 192 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Running back Eric Carter rushed for 104 yards on 17 carries and Marquis Foshee added 71 yards on 17 touches.
The Buccaneers (11-2) will travel to Rockingham 7:30 p.m. Friday. This is the fourth time in five seasons Jack Britt has reached the third round of the playoffs.
SCOTLAND 56, LEE COUNTY 27
LAURINBURG — For the second straight week, Scotland jumped out to a big first-half lead en route to a 56-27 victory over Lee County.
The Fighting Scots led 28-0 at the end of the first quarter and extended their advantage to 49-0 at halftime behind their defense and the running of Josh McPhatter.
The junior running back rushed for three touchdowns in the first 12 minutes and spark Scotland (11-1). The defense limited Lee County to 106 total yards of offense in the first half and returned a fumble for a score as well.
“I’m proud of our guys and I’m proud of the effort the second team gave out there as well,” Scotland coach Richard Bailey said to the Laurinburg Exchange. “Our defense played lights out and it’s safe to say that their quarterback (Chase Arrington) wasn’t used to getting hit like he did in that first half of football.”
Scotland will welcome E.E. Smith to Pate Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Golden Bulls advanced to the third round with their 54-36 win over Southeast Guilford.
