The new Hamlet Visitor’s Center debuted its cultural exhibit on Oct. 27 at the Hamlet Seaboard Festival, but a special preview fundraiser was held on Oct. 26 to give folks a glimpse into the makings of the exhibit.
The evening began with a prayer by Councilman Tony Clewis, followed by opening remarks from Hamlet Mayor Jeff Smart. City Manager Marchell Adams David followed, expressing gratitude to everyone named and nameless that has supported the project.
Museum Manager and Downtown Coordinator Miranda Chavis then explained the exhibit’s concept to the audience.
“We had an amazing event, with approximately 65 to 70 in attendance,” Chavis said. “Locklear Vineyard and Winery of Maxton, N.C., provided the wine-tasting of their red and white vintages, from sweet to semi-dry.
“Words can not express my appreciation for my reception by city officials and citizens of the town of Hamlet,” Chavis said. “Everyone has welcomed me with open arms, and I have received wonderful support from the community in response to the Visitor’s Center and the new exhibit. It’s exciting to see people get nostalgic over topics covered by ‘Small Beginnings, Big Dreams.’ Some people will say, ‘hey, I remember working at Buttercup!,’ while others remember attending Hamlet High School. Either way, this resonance that people have experienced with this exhibit has made all the effort worthwhile.”
