A habitual felon free on bond was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of committing felony crimes the same as those for which he was arrested several months ago, the Rockingham Police Department said.

Keith Allen Thomas, 51, Hollywood Avenue, Rockingham, was arrested on felony charges of possession of cocaine with intent to sell or deliver and maintaining a place for controlled substances.

His bond was set at $250,000.

Vice/Narcotics units of both the police department and Richmond County Sheriff’s Office were involved in a investigation of suspected drug activities of Thomas. The Special Response Team from the sheriff’s office went along with investigators to make the arrest should there be any problems.

Lt. Creed Freeman of the police department said Thomas was arrested on the same type charges recently and was set free on $100,000 bond.

During the arrest, 10 grams of crack cocaine were seized. Also seized was $667.

Freeman said during Thomas’ lifetime he has spent some 30 years in state prisons for various charges after he was convicted. “He is a habitual felon,” he said.

Sheriff Dale Furr said he hoped the 20A District Attorney’s Office would be able to move the cases against Thomas forward as quickly as possible.

“He has a serious illness requiring medication costing several thousands of dollars a month,” said Sheriff Dale Furr. “As long as he is kept under our protection, Richmond County taxpayers are responsible for all his medical bills.”
