While the other spring sports at Richmond have several games under their belt, the Lady Raiders soccer team will finally play they season-opener today at Forest Hills starting at 6 p.m.

According to coach Bennie Howard, the Lady Raiders were to already played three games. Richmond’s opening game against Southwest Randolph was snowed out, and two other games were let off the schedule because of mix-ups.

“We were supposed to have played E.E. Smith on the fourth of March, and Terry Sanford on the sixth,” Howard said. “When I set the schedule back in November, I talked to both coaches and we agreed on those dates. Then somehow their ADs (athletic directors) got involved and scheduled games on the same dates. They got double booked and we got kicked to the curve.”

Howard said the Yellow Jackets will have played four games going into their matchup against Richmond. But Howard is hoping fatigue will settle in for the Jackets because the game will be their third in a week.

“We’re at a disadvantage because the other team (Forest Hills) has played more games than we have,” Howard said. “I’m hoping they will be tired because they played Monday, Wednesday and then play us. Hopefully, we can sneak in there and get a win.”

Richmond will have to do it without the services of injured starters Michelle Brown, who is out for the season following right ankle surgery, while Ashley Hillenburg is battling a foot injury. Plus, backup Kelsey Bailey will not play because of an illness.

“We still haven’t had a practice with everyone here,” Howard said. “The girls that are here are working hard, and hopefully it will pay off in our first game.”
