The Rockingham Police Department has received two separate reports this week involving the use of counterfeit $100 bills.

According to Detective Sgt. Donovan Young of the police department, some of the fake bills have matching serial numbers, but some do not.

Authorities say the bills are being made by bleaching a five dollar bill and copying a 100 onto its face. Pens used to check for the validity of the bill will then be useless, Young said.

The detective added that when the counterfeit bills are held up, the face of Abraham Lincoln will still be visible.

Police say the subject passing the bills has been described as a well-dressed black male.

If you receive a counterfeit bill, call the Rockingham Police Department at 910-895-2468.
