Quakers in Richmond County will be the topic of a meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at Rockingham City Hall, Rockingham Road, when the Richmond County Historical Society meets.

Trent Strickland, Ph.D., will share his research into these early settlers.

He was able to document the Quaker Meeting House as being located in Richmond County beside the Pee Dee River near Solomon’s Creek south of Cordova.

Through his efforts, a Historical N .C. Highway Marker was placed at the intersection of U.S. 1 South and Rosalyn Road telling of its location to the west.

Both North and South Carolina claimed the important Quaker Meeting House location. Dating back to the 1750s, Quakers were meeting there which is also the vicinity of the old Hailey’s Ferry.

Strickland’s work was recognized by the Friends (Quakers) Historical Society of Guilford College.

The Friends on June 26, 2001, erected a stone monument at the cemetery at that location.

At a recent executive board meeting of the society, a bronze plague was approved to be placed at the entrance to the Rockingham Seaboard Depot. It will present a brief history of the building and sources of revenue for its restoration.

Monday was also approved to install railings along the front steps of the building.

The depot is now occupied by the Richmond County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Authority. The Chamber is working on a sign for the building identifying it as the Chamber and visitor center.

It was approved by the board that the 1973 La France fire truck used by the Rockingham Fire Department be inspected. It is being housed in a spare garage owned by Rockingham First Baptist Church.

Included in the recent work of the Genealogical Committee is the filing of the records from the Rockingham Redevelopment/Urban Renewal project.
