CHARLOTTE — Richmond Senior offensive lineman Tyrone Crowder is one of the top five finalists for the WSOC-TV Channel 9 and High School Football Extra’s Big 22 Player of the Year honor.
The finalists were selected by a percentage of public votes and a percentage of votes from the sports team at WSOC-TV.
Besides Crowder, the other contenders for the award are: Quarterback Devin Pearson from South Pointe in Rock Hill, S.C.; quarterback Michael Radford of Charlotte Country Day; wide receiver/running back Devan Robbins from South Point in Belmont; and running back Lee Wright of York in York, S.C.
Players were nominated by coaches in the WSOC-TV viewing area and following a review of the choices, the Big 22 were selected by a panel of judges, consisting of the station’s sports team.
The second round of public voting to pick the Player of the Year will begin at 3 p.m. today and continue until 10 a.m. Oct. 29. The finalist which receives the most public votes will be named the POTY, be awarded a personalized trophy and his school will receive a $10,000 donation for the scholarship fund.
Scotland sweeps Richmond in finale
LAURINBURG — The Scotland volleyball team claimed a 25-14, 25-18, 25-11 victory over Richmond Senior in the regular season finale for both schools.
“We jumped on Richmond pretty good, and now it’s a question of whether we can hit our stride at just the right time with the playoffs right around the corner,” Scotland coach David Barnes said to the Laurinburg Exchange.
The Fighting Scots clinched the No. 1 seed in next week’s conference tournament, while the Raiders are expected to finish fourth in the standings. If Richmond (10-10, 3-7) is the fourth seed, the Raiders would play host to Lumberton in the first round at 7 p.m. Monday. However, if the Pirates finish fourth, the Raiders would travel to Lumberton Monday.
Raiders rout Pirates in JV football
ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior junior varsity football team recorded its sixth shutout on the season with a 55-0 victory over Lumberton in a Southeastern Conference clash Thursday night at Raider Stadium.
The Raiders (8-0, 3-0) led 21-0 at the end of the first quarter and extended their advantage to 41-0 at halftime.
“The defense was again lights out,” Richmond JV coach Jason Norton said. “Offensively, when the option is clicking like it was tonight, it’s a good thing to watch. We had some problems snapping the ball. That is expected because of the cold weather, but we will work on that in practice.”
Richmond will close out its season with a road game 7 p.m. Thursday at Pinecrest before heading to Scotland on Oct. 25.
