Woman cited for train-car accident

A Hoffman woman was injured Thursday when the vehicle she was driving was struck by a CSX train on tracks in Hoffman on Tilly Street, the N.C. Highway Patrol said.

Eva Lynne Ellerbe, 41, Collins Street, Hoffman, was taken to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital for treatment.

The patrol said Ellerbe traveled around the stop arm at the railroad tracks and into the path of an oncoming train.

The car was knocked off the tracks and overturned.

The patrol said the stop arms and flashers were working properly at the time of the collision.

Ellerbe was cited for a railroad crossing violation and unsafe tires. Her 2000 Mazda received $5,000 damage.

The train engine driven by Ronald L. Wallace of Whispering Pines received $500 damage.

In another accident, three people were injured at 9:33 a.m. March 1 on the U.S. 220 Bypass in Ellerbe.

Kenneth Todd Cauthen, 36; Laurin April Cauthen, 32; and Kennedy Cauthen, 2, all of Seven Lakes were injured and taken to FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Stein was cited for exceeding a safe speed. His 2006 Buick received $10,000 damage; the car Cauthen was driving, $2,000.
