At a meeting Tuesday at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital, she said that after most people are told the crash statistics dealing with children, they are more understanding.
But not all, she said. At a recent checkpoint held with law enforcement agencies, she said one man was unconvinced and uncooperative.
“But we made nine kids safer by checking their safety seats with the cooperation of the adults in the vehicle,” she said.
At license checking events in the county, she said officials still encounter situations where children are not appropriately protected.
“With too many people, it is just not a priority,” she said.
At checkpoints, members of the Safe Kids Coalition certified technician team offer their assistance in assuring that child safety seats are properly installed.
Child safety events are being planned by the coalition in Richmond County through May 15.
The Mid-Carolinas Region is planning to assist with child safety events this spring also in Montgomery, Moore, Hoke and Scotland counties.
Hamilton said she was trying to confirm a date for Cub Scouts to work on a safety badge in cooperation with Dieffenbach GM Superstore.
Safe Kids plans to have displays at the Thunderfest on the Square in Rockingham on April 17. Hamilton said they will be set up with law enforcement displays which will include several popular simulator machines.
Kids’ Day is a big annual event from 9 a.m. to noon May 9 at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital where this year she hopes the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation will bring a fire dog. There are five such dogs in the state who alert on material which can cause fires.
In addition to a car seat clinic at the event, Hamilton said she hopes to have gun locks and bicycle helmets available.
The coalition Tuesday discussed the need locally for programs on smoke detectors, which in too many cases are still absent from residences which catch on fire.
On May 15, a first responder event is being planned in coordination with UNC Hospitals in which a helicopter ambulance will be featured. The date is yet to be finalized because of possible conflicts with other events.
Michelle Grant of Richmond County Partnership for Children announced her organization in cooperation with Richmond Community College would be holding a Fun Day at the college from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 18.
