RAEFORD — It sounds like a broken record, but Hoke County keeps winning on the strength of another strong performance by senior running back Detrez Newsome.
Against Sanderson, Newsome accounted for more than 300 all-purpose yards and had five touchdowns to lead Hoke County to a 49-7 win. The victory improves the Bucks to 4-0 on the season.
Newsome had touchdown runs of 2, 3, 65 and 72 yards in the contest. He added a 65-yard punt return in the second quarter.
Hoke County will return to the gridiron 7:30 p.m. Friday when it travels to face Cape Fear. The Colts fell to 0-4 following a 62-31 loss at Gray’s Creek.
SCOTLAND 32, JACK BRITT 6
HOPE MILLS — Scotland coach Richard Bailey made a triumphant return to Jack Britt, leading his Fighting Scots to a 32-6 victory.
Bailey compiled a 119-44 record in 12 seasons at Jack Britt before resigning and taking the position with Scotland in the spring.
TraShawn Gregory had three touchdown receptions for the Fighting Scots, while quarterback Jaylend Ratliffe was 13-for-15 for 167 yards in the air in the win.
“He made plays, he went up and got a couple,” Jack Britt coach Brian Rimpf said about Gregory to the Fayetteville Observer. “Sometimes people just make plays and Gregory made quite a few tonight.”
Scotland (3-1) will travel to Wadesboro to take on Anson (1-3) at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Bearcats knocked off Chesterfield (S.C.) 34-27 to claim their first victory of the year.
LUMBERTON 42, SEVENTY-FIRST 26
LUMBERTON — Senior running back Daniel Robinson continues to make his case for being mentioned among the elite in the Southeastern Conference.
Robinson rushed for a career-high 243 yards and four touchdowns on 26 touches to lead the Pirates to a 42-26 win over Seventy-First at Alton G. Brooks Stadium.
“We were just taking what they were giving us and I was kind of surprised with the stuff we were getting,” Lumberton coach Mike Brill said to The Robesonian. “We just hoped to score and the kids did what they could and that’s all I can ask … we won another and that’s what counts.”
Lumberton improves to 3-1 on the season and will play host to Athens Drive at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Jaguars defeated Green Hope 24-20 to also move to 3-1 on the year.
REAGAN 28, PINECREST 20
SOUTHERN PINES — After booting a 60-yard field goal, the second longest in state high school history, earlier the game, Pinecrest’s Jackson Maples faced a 43-yard boot to put the Patriots in front with under a minute to play.
Maples’ kick never reached its destination as Reagan’s A.J. Ikwechegh reached out to block the attempt and teammate Dakota Pinnix picked up the loose ball and raced 45 yards for the game-clinching score as the Raiders downed the Patriots 28-20.
After trailing 20-7, Reagan scored the contest’s final 21 points to pull out the win to improve to 3-1, while Pinecrest falls to 2-2.
“We had too many mentals (mistakes),” Pinecrest coach Chris Metzger said to The Pilot. “It was a tough day, a tough loss. We have to tip our hat to Reagan.”
Pinecrest will travel to Lillington to take on Western Hartnett at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Eagles fell to 1-3 on the year following a 49-30 loss to Triton.
NEW HANOVER 56, PURNELL SWETT 19
WILMINGTON — New Hanover’s Trevon Brown was a one-man wrecking crew against Purnell Swett.
Brown scored six touchdowns, including returning the opening kick 90 yards for a score, to lead the Wildcats to a 56-19 win over the Rams.
New Hanover rolled up 311 yards of total offense in the first half to build a 36-point advantage at halftime.
“Tonight we came out early and against a lot of teams if we come out early we have a chance to get some other kids in, get them better, move some other kids off so we can stay healthy,” New Hanover coach Kevin Motsinger said to the Star-News. “That’s not being arrogant. That’s the honest truth.”
Purnell Swett (1-3) will return home to face South Robeson at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Mustangs (2-2) lost a shootout with Southern Lee 30-24.
