ROCKINGHAM — Davina LeGrand put an exclamation point on Richmond Senior’s conference opening win over Hoke County.
The sophomore recorded a service ace to close out a 25-13, 14-25, 25-14, 25-13 victory over the Bucks Thursday night in Raider Gymnasium and stretch the Raiders’ winning streak to six games.
Sophomore middle blocker Chelsea Davis, who missed the early part of the season with an injury, was in the starting lineup replacing Hunter Parks. Wimpey expects to have Parks back in the rotation next week.
“We are playing very well right now,” Richmond coach Shellie Wimpey said. “All of the girls are practicing hard and are dedicated. Anybody can step into the lineup and help us out.”
Despite the four-game victory, Wimpey continues to be puzzled by her team’s play in the second set.
“After the first game, I think they got a little cocky,” Wimpey said. “I’m proud of the way they responded and didn’t give up. It’s been like this all year. I don’t know why.”
One of the new wrinkles Wimpey has added to the Raiders (8-3, 1-0) to try and combat the second-set woes is calling plays before a serve. Wimpey said she recently started incorporating this into the team’s offense.
“I wanted to introduce something new before the end so we can be better and build on it for next year,” Wimpey said. “We have only been doing this for about a week now.”
Richmond will return to the court 6 p.m. Tuesday when it travels to SEC foe Purnell Swett.
Lumberton edges RSHS in tennis
LUMBERTON — The Lumberton girls tennis team won five of six singles matches to claim a 5-4 victory over Richmond Senior Thursday afternoon.
The lone victory for the Raiders (1-3, 1-2) in singles came at No. 5, where Summer Jacobs defeated Kaylynn Leggette 6-2, 6-2.
In the other singles matches, Lumberton’s Callie Carter breezed past Caroline Kirkland 6-1, 6-1 and Abby Cain claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win over Katy Shelley. Abby Kinlaw got past Abbi Carpenter 6-0, 6-4, while Lizzie Branch edged Haleigh Denham 4-6, 6-4, 10-8. Lane Hickman closed out the victory for the Pirates with her 6-0, 6-0 win over Peyton Hunt.
Richmond captured all three of the doubles contests. Kirkland and Shelley downed Haley Biggins and Molly Willoughby 8-2. Carpenter and Denham knocked off Summer Martin and Kayetlyn Lowry 8-0, while Jacobs and Hunt rolled over Logan Ivey and Hannah Watson 8-1.
“We played a lot better than we did on Tuesday,” Richmond coach Paula York said. “We didn’t make the same type of errors we did on Tuesday. Lumberton has a good team.”
Richmond will return to the courts at 4 p.m. Monday when it plays host to East Montgomery. York added there was a schedule change next week. The Scotland match will now be played at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Raiders finish second in meet
RAEFORD — The Richmond Senior boys and girls cross country teams finished second behind Pinecrest in the first meet of the season Wednesday afternoon.
The Raiders notched 38 points, while the Patriots tallied 21. Hoke County was third at 60. Brandon Gibson had Richmond’s best finish, fourth in a time of 18:36. Maurice O’Neal was sixth, Cody Wilson came in eight, followed by Alfonso Ratliff and Randy Altman in ninth and 11th, respectively.
In the girls race, Pinecrest had 16 points, Richmond recorded 50 and Hoke County finished with 63.
Morgan Tedder registered a fifth-place finish in a time of 23:36. Belle Hillenburg was 10th and Ana Rivers came in 13th.
The Raiders will return to action 5 p.m. Wednesday at Hinson Lake.
Schedule changes for Richmond
ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior boys soccer team’s matchup with Anson scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday has been canceled because of the lack of players for the Bearcats.
The Raiders next game will be 7:30 p.m. Wednesday against Southeastern Conference rival Hoke County.
The Richmond Senior junior varsity football team’s game with South View was rained out. JV coach Jason Norton thought the schools would attempt to reschedule the contest, but was unsure of when it would occur.
The team’s next contest is set for 7 p.m. Thursday when West Forsyth visits Raider Stadium.
