RAEFORD — It might not be a thing of beauty to outsiders, but Hoke County coach Milton Butts will take victories anyway he can get them.
Butts watched as his Bucks extended their unbeaten streak to three games after posting a 35-20 win over Seventy-First.
“I wasn’t surprised at all,” Butts said to the Fayetteville Observer about Seventy-First keeping it close despite being winless. “What we wanted to see was when we got down how we fought back. We were able to fight them off.”
Senior running back Detrez Newsome continues to post gaudy rushing numbers for Hoke County. Newsome rushed for 101 yards and three touchdowns in the victory over the Falcons. In the first three contests, Newsome has run for 686 yards.
The Bucks will look to remain undefeated when Sanderson visits Raeford Friday night.
LUMBERTON 27, SOUTH VIEW 26
HOPE MILLS — Lumberton’s Demetrius Sheridan blocked a South View extra-point attempt with 5:11 remaining in the contest to preserve the Pirates’ 27-26 win over South View.
Following the blocked kick, Lumberton relied on the legs of senior running back Daniel Robinson to run the clock down before punting the ball back to the Tigers. On South View’s final possession of the game, Jermaine Williams and Sheridan registered tackles for loss to lock down the win.
“We’re tickled to death to win this one,” Lumberton coach Mike Brill said to The Robesonian. “We shot ourselves in the foot a couple of times with a chance to seal it. I’ve got to give my guys credit though because they showed a lot of heart.”
Lumberton (2-1) will play its first home game of the season Friday when it hosts Seventy-First.
SCOTLAND 20, MARLBORO COUNTY (S.C.) 12
LAURINBURG — Rebounding from its first loss in 16 games, Scotland slipped past Marlboro County (S.C.) 20-12.
The Bulldogs entered the contest with their neighbors to the north having not allowed a point on the season. Scotland ended Marlboro County’s scoreless streak at 8-plus quarters, when Ben Utter connected on a 23-yard field goal.
Josh McPhatter added an 18-yard touchdown run in the win.
The Fighting Scots (2-1) will travel to Jack Britt Friday. It is a homecoming for Scotland coach Richard Bailey, who coached at Jack Britt when the school opened in 2000 before leaving to take the reins in Laurinburg this year.
PINECREST 44, COX MILL 27
CONCORD — Pinecrest rallied from a 14-point first-quarter deficit to knock off Cox Mill 44-27.
Dwayne Simpson rushed for 206 yards and five touchdowns on 18 carries. Simpson broke free for scoring runs of 2, 7, 8 14, 64 yards in the victory.
Simpson’s five scores, according to The Pilot, could be a school record.
“Dwayne runs hard, breaks tackles and has great vision,” Pinecrest coach Chris Metzger said to The Pilot. “I think what is more amazing is how he goes about being a leader. He’s the total package.”
Pinecrest (2-1) will look to stretch its winning streak to three when Reagan comes to Southern Pines Friday night.
HOGGARD 53, PURNELL SWETT 10
PEMBROKE — Purnell Swett had a 10-6 lead in the opening moments of the second quarter before the wheels came flying off.
Hoggard scored 47 unanswered points the rest of the way to cruise to a 53-10 victory. The lone bright spot for Purnell Swett was running back Andrew Hill, who for rushed for 133 yards on 13 carries and had three receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown.
The Rams committed six turnovers during the Vikings’ big run, which upset coach Mark Heil.
“You cannot win a football game throwing the kind of interceptions we did tonight, lofting the ball and fumbling — just dropping the ball on the ground with no care whatsoever,” Heil said to The Robesonian. “I’m sorry but you can blame all the coaching that you want, but a kid has to squeeze a football.”
Purnell Swett will travel to Wilmington to face New Hanover Friday night.
