Kimberly Harrington of Hamlet, a native of Lilesville, will be among the press corps covering the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte next week.
The award-winning writer has been granted media credentials for the DNC through “The Charlotte Post,” a historic newspaper serving the African-American community in the Charlotte-Metro area.
“I am so thrilled at the opportunity to cover an event of this caliber and national significance,” Harrington said. “I am grateful to God for a writing career that has led to this moment and to the editorial team of ‘The Post’ for considering me.”
Harrington’s journalism career started at The Anson Record in Wadesboro in 1994, where she worked for four years. She then transferred to the Richmond County Daily Journal and rose through the ranks from reporter to senior staff writer and news editor. In 2006, she was promoted to editor and transferred to The Cheraw Chronicle in Cheraw, S.C.
One year later, she accepted a position of marketing and public relations director for Sandhills Regional Medical Center in Hamlet, where she serves and lives today. However, she never abandoned her journalistic roots.
In 2008, she started writing a weekly column for “The Charlotte Post” that ended in 2011. During that tenure, “The Post” featured a front-page article on her coverage of President Barack Obama’s inauguration.
“A few months ago, the editor of The Charlotte Post called and asked if I would be interested in helping the newspaper cover the DNC,” Harrington said. “I said, ‘Are you kidding? Of course I would. That would be the experience of a lifetime.’”
Harrington said she is looking forward to meeting members of the national media and hearing the stories of people from all across the country.
Harrington is hoping to meet First Lady Michelle Obama. She had the opportunity to meet then-presidential candidate Barack Obama in 2008 when he was campaigning in Charlotte. “It would be an honor to meet his wife. She seems to strike the perfect balance of class, charm and practicality,” she said.
“I am confident this will be one of those experiences that will further shape and advance my purpose,” said Harrington. “I thank God for entrusting this assignment to me. I hope and pray the coverage that our Charlotte Post team provides will enlighten, empower and educate its readers.”
Harrington is the daughter of Sarah Harrington of Lilesville and the late T.C. Ratliff.
