Hassie “Shorty” James Stancil Jr., 64, died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, at Sindney Grove Church of Deliverance, 401 McIntyre Road, Ellerbe, with Bishop A. Simpson officiating. Interment will follow at Sidney Grove Gardens. Public viewing will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, at Nelson Funeral Home of Rockingham.
Stancil was born Oct. 19, 1947 in Ellerbe, to the late Hassie and Wincie Nicholson Stancil Sr. He attended Richmond County Schools and worked at Hernando’s Hideaway as a cook. Stancil served in the United States Army and while serving was wounded in Vietnam, in combat. He was honored with two Purple Heart medals. Stancil also worked dutifully for 37 years and retired from Alcoa Aluminum. He was a member of the M.W. Prince Hall Grand Lodge #44.
Stancil was preceded in death by his parents listed above and a brother, Wilorva Stancil.
He is survived by a wife, Yvonne Little Stancil, four sons, Rev. Corey D. Little (Anissa) of Fayetteville, Donald M. Stancil (Cleisha) of Charlotte, Kelly Stancil of the home, Nicholas Stancil of Rockingham, four brothers, Robert Stancil (Delores) of Ellerbe, Stevie Stancil of Johnson City, TN, Kenneth Stancil (Angela) of Ellerbe, Walter Stancil of Reidsville, four sisters, Carrie Brown, Carolyn Jackson (Apostle “A.J.”) of Dallas, TX, Maggie Greene (Connie) of Ellerbe, three aunts, and five grandchildren.
Nelson Funeral Home of Rockingham will be assisting the Stancil family.
