ROCKINGHAM — Coming off the heels of its 56-28 season-opening victory over Sun Valley, Richmond Senior is ranked second in the year’s initial CarolinaPreps.com 4A poll.

The Raiders received eight second-place votes to finish with 72 points. Butler, which defeated Mallard Creek 27-6 Friday night, garnered all of the top votes in the poll and complied 80 points. New Bern, this week’s No. 3 team, rolled past Hillside, 40-20. The Bears were 11 points better than Independence, which routed Hough, 31-14.

Rounding out the top five was defending Southeastern Conference and 4A state champions Scotland. The Fighting Scots began their title defense with a 35-6 victory over Seventy-First.

East Forsyth, New Hanover, Jack Britt, Mallard Creek and Dudley completed the top 10. In the others receiving votes group was SEC member Hoke County. The Bucks finished with five votes, two behind Dudley. Hoke County opened the season with a 48-30 win against Ashley.

In the website’s Top 25 Power Rankings for all classifications, Richmond was again second to Butler. Havelock came in at No. 3 followed by New Bern and Independence. Scotland was seventh and Hoke County placed 16th after the first week.

The Raiders didn’t fare as well in the MaxPreps.com poll. Richmond was ranked sixth behind Butler, New Bern, Mallard Creek, Scotland and Porter Ridge.

Unlike the CarolinaPreps.com poll which tabulates votes from writers across the state, Maxpreps.com uses computer-based rankings. The program takes into consideration quality wins against other highly-ranked opponents as well as strength of schedule.

The first Associated Press poll is slated to be released on Sept. 4.
