Mrs. Elva Grace McFayden Laton passed away peacefully Thursday, August 16, at Somerset Court, Hamlet, NC, where she had lived for approximately three years.

Born August 26, 1924, in Ellerbe, NC, Elva was one of seven children of John Calvin McFayden and Mildred Carpenter McFayden.

While attending the public school in Ellerbe, Elva memorized many poems and could still recite some of them shortly before she moved to Somerset Count even though she was in her 80’s. Elva graduated in 1941 from Ellerbe High School as class valedictorian. She attended Montreat College in Montreat, NC.

After World War II, Elva worked at the Farmers’ Cooperative Exchange in Concord, NC, for two years. Later, she worked for approximately ten years at Mabry’s Drug Store in Hamlet, NC.

In 1947, Elva and Wilbur Price Laton were married. Wilbur passed away in 1992 forty-five years later. They were faithful members of Calvary Baptist Church, Hamlet, NC, for many years. Elva was active in the Woman’s Missionary Union and taught a children’s Sunday School class rarely missing a Sunday.

Elva enjoyed reading, working in her garden, and watching Jeopardy on television. She always knew the answers to many of the questions asked during the program.

Elva was pre-deceased by two brothers John C. McFayden, Jr. and Henry G. McFayden and two sisters Mildred Agnes Laton and Louise Ussery.

Survivors are her son and daughter-in-law David R. Laton and Vivian, Hamlet, NC; one brother Bill McFayden and wife Ann, Ellerbe, NC; and one sister, Betty Houser of Cocoa Beach, Florida.

Visitation will be held 6:00 - 8:00 PM Saturday, August 18, at Watson-King Funeral Home, Hamlet, NC. A private Graveside Service will be held 4:30 PM, Sunday, August l9, at Richmond County Memorial Park with Rev. Scott Conner officiating.

Memorial donations may be given to the Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund, 406 McDonald Ave, Hamlet, NC 28345.

The family would like to thank Elva’s neighbor and care giver Martha Peele and the staff at Somerset Court for all their care and kindnesses to their loved one.
