ROCKINGHAM — It didn’t take long for the Richmond Senior junior varsity football team to get on the scoreboard in its season opener.
After having a kickoff return called back because of a penalty, the Raiders needed just two plays from scrimmage to score the first of their nine touchdowns in the game en route to a 63-0 win over Sun Valley Thursday afternoon.
Richmond (1-0) had a punt return nullified later in the game because of a block in the back. Those were the only blemishes on a nearly perfect game by the Raiders.
“Those were us being a little too aggressive and blocking behind the play,” Junior varsity coach Jason Norton said. “I will take the effort every time.”
In addition to the offense getting into its rhythm early, the defense found a way to get on the scoreboard as well. Richmond returned two fumbles for touchdowns on consecutive series. Deonte Brown forced a fumble by Sun Valley quarterback Drew Swoope, which Matt Sellers scooped up for a 12-yard touchdown. Moments later Ray Ellerbe returned a Kyree Lotharp fumble 12 yards for a score.
Even after having the two returns wiped off the board, Richmond special teams unit added a blocked punt for a safety just before halftime.
Miles Grant rushed for three touchdowns for the Raiders, while Shavar Little added another two scores.
“Our kids played hard,” Norton said. “Our second group played hard and wants to play just as much as the first team. The competition is going to get a lot tougher.”
Richmond returns to action at 6 p.m. Thursday at home against Lee County. The game will once again be played on the practice fields behind the softball field.
