ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior volleyball team was seven points away from taking a commanding 2-0 lead in its match with South Robeson when the wheels came flying off.
The Mustangs rallied to score 11 of the next 15 points to tie the contest at 1-all en route to an 18-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-22 victory over the Raiders Wednesday evening.
“The sad thing is if we played like we did on Monday, we beat this team,” Richmond coach Shellie Wimpey said. “We didn’t look like we wanted to be out there. We weren’t talking. We weren’t communicating at all and we did a good job of that on Monday.”
In the third game, Richmond and South Robeson were knotted at 17 before the visitors scored the next three points to take command. The Mustangs (2-0) took a 2-1 lead in the match when Jaquel Stackhouse notched her third kill of the game to close out the victory.
The Raiders (0-2) built a four-point lead at 13-9 in the fourth game before the Mustangs stormed back to score 11 of the next 13 points. After serving an ace to trim the deficit to 24-22, Ashton Davenport’s next serve went into the net to give South Robeson the match. It was Richmond’s ninth missed serve on the night after recording just four in its season-opening loss to Union Pines.
“If we make one mistake out there, then we make two, three or four,” Wimpey said. “Even if we’re up, when we make one mistake we dwell on it. No one can stop it but us. As a team, we need to shake it off and have someone to step up and be a leader. It doesn’t matter if it’s a senior, junior or a sophomore, but we need someone to be a leader.”
Richmond opened Game 1 by overcoming a three-point deficit and cruising to the win behind the hitting of Chelsea Barrington. The junior notched four of her 10 kills in the opening game.
The Raiders will return to the court at 6 p.m. tonight against Marlboro Academy. The junior varsity, which defeated South Robeson 2-0, will play at 5 p.m.
Richmond edges East Montgomery
BISCOE — Armando Garcia scored a goal and added an assist, while Juan Onesto netted the other goal to lead Richmond Senior to a 2-1 victory over East Montgomery in a nonconference soccer match Wednesday night.
The contest was halted after the first half because of weather.
“The game was delayed something like three times because of lightning,” Richmond coach Bennie Howard said. “We were getting ready to get back on the field when there was some more lightning. The other coach and I agreed because it was a nonconference game to call it. It was not the way I wanted to get the win, but I’ll take it.”
Richmond (2-0) will return to action at 7 p.m. Monday at Union Pines. The junior varsity will hit the field at 5:30 p.m.
“We still have some things to work on,” Howard said. “We have a long way to go and a short time to get there.”
