The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a tornado warning for southeastern Montgomery County, southwestern Moore County and northeastern Richmond County until 3 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service, “at 2:20 p.m., the National Weather Service Doppler Radar indicated a tornado over Norman … or 13 miles southeast of Troy … moving east at 20 mph.”
Locations impacted include Norman, Derby, Seven Lakes and Foxfire.
A severe thunderstorm warning is also in effect for Richmond County until 3:45 p.m.
Precautionary/preparedness actions are to:
Take cover now. Move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows. If in a mobile home, vehicle or outdoors, move to the closest substantial shelter. If no shelter is available, lie down in a low lying area. Protect yourself from flying debris.
According to the National Weather Service, "straight line winds can blow down trees...power lines...and damage mobile homes and other buildings. Seek shelter in a sturdy structure until the storm has passed. Stay away from windows as flying debris generated by damaging winds can be deadly. Please report severe weather to the nearest law enforcement agency. They will relay your report to the National Weather Service forecast office in Raleigh."
A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 10 p.m. Wednesday evening for central North Carolina.
