The Rockingham City Council will be discussing softball, grease traps and taxis when it meets at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The council will meet for its regular monthly meeting at City Hall, 514 Rockingham Road, Rockingham.
Tuesday’s meeting will begin with a special presentation to the Rockingham 10U Dixie All-Stars who are the 2012 Dixie Angels World Series softball champions, after a recent series of games in Georgia.
The team is a part of Rockingham’s Parks and Recreation Department, and is comprised of six 10-year-olds and six 9-year-olds. The girls along with their coaches, including Head Coach Michael Way, have been invited to City Hall for special recognition by Mayor Gene McLaurin and the City Council.
Since the World Series opener in Georgetown, S.C., on July 30, the girls remained undefeated. And on Aug. 1, a 6-1 victory against Jones County National, Ga., brought the championship home for the girls.
The girls’ journey to the championship was a long one, said Coach Way.
“The girls had to win the District 4 tournament in Norwood, N.C., and the State Tournament in Eden, N.C., in order to make it to the World Series,” Way said. “Not only did they win both the district and state tournaments, but they did it with a perfect 8-0 record. This was a huge accomplishment because it meant that our girls would represent the state of North Carolina in the World Series. We were thrilled just to make it to the World Series and knew that the competition would be tough.
“… We hope that these girls realize what a huge accomplishment this is. They are World Series Champions. They have done something that no other team from North Carolina has done before,” said the coach.
“As coaches, we could not be prouder of the determination that this group of girls has shown. They fought to come from behind in four of their games to come out on top. They never gave up. Throughout this tournament, our girls played with such heart. They are truly a team in every sense,” Way said.
In other matters, the City Council will consider a Fats, Oils, and Grease Control Ordinance, to help prevent the mess created for public sanitary sewer systems when grease from food service operations builds up in the pipes and equipment.
The draft ordinance says it’s designed to “aid in the prevention of Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO’s) caused by grease accumulation in its sanitary sewer system.”
And further, “Any nonresidential facility connected to the City of Rockingham’s sanitary sewer collection and treatment system involved in the preparation or serving of foods will be subject to the conditions of this ordinance.”
The ordnance would require, in part, that these establishments discharge all waste from sinks, dishwashers, drains and any other fixtures through which fats, oils, and grease may be discharged, into a properly maintained grease trap or interceptor. The grease interceptor shall be constructed at the owner’s expense, according to the proposed ordinance.
Other agenda items before the council include:
• Consideration of appointments to the Land Use Plan Steering Committee.
• A public hearing on several Community Development Block Grant programs, including 2012 Infrastructure Program, 2012 Infrastructure Hook-Up Program, 2012 Small Business and Entrepreneurial Assistance Grant Program, 2012 NC Catalyst Program.
• Discussion of a proposed Taxicab Permit Ordinance, which Police Chief Billy Kelly has asked council to review. Additional discussion on this matter will be held in September.
