National 811 Day will be recognized and celebrated on Aug. 11 by NC 811 at Bur-Mil Park in Greensboro, located at 5834 Bur-Mil Club Road.

The event will be held to increase awareness of their service as well as educate the public on the necessary steps involved in concluding excavation projects without damage to utility lines and without personal injury.

National 811 Day will feature food, tennis, swimming, golf, nature trails, fishing, corn hole and more.

Not just on Aug. 11, but every day of the year, it is important to follow four simple steps to ensure success in the excavation process. They are:

• Make the call to NC 811.

• Wait the required time.

• Respect the marks.

• Dig with care.

After making the call, a locate ticket number will be provided as well as the names of the utility companies that are members of NC 811 that will be notified of the locate request. After having made the call, North Carolina law requires a two working days notice be given to the utility owners before the digging begins. Once all underground facilities have been marked, excavation activities may begin. Once the underground lines have been marked, it is very important that the stakes, flags or paint not be disturbed and that they are respected for the duration of the excavation.
