Golfs, Jettas and GTIs; Routans, Safaris and Sciroccos; Passats, Tiguans and Touaregs; Beetles, Karmann Ghias, dune buggys, dragsters, maybe even a ‘60s era microbus or two — any and every thing Volkswagen will be featured this Sunday at Rockingham Dragway when Valley Auto World presents “VWs at the Rock.”
It’s all Volkswagens, with three drag races, a swap meet, VW vendors and a VW car show crowning awards to 20 different classes.
Defending racing champions include Mike Gagnier of Troutman, who won Super Pro last year at the wheel of a VW Buggy; Steve Martinez of Wilmington, the Pro winner in a 1965 VW Beetle; and Rick Laws of Millers Creek, whose 1970 Karmann Ghia prevailed in the Sportsman ET class.
Among the added attractions will be a Valley Auto World display featuring the Turbo VW Beetle as well as new 2013 280 horsepower V-6 VW Passats.
Gates open at 9 a.m. Sunday with time trials at 10 a.m. followed by show car judging and the start of drag race eliminations at noon. Adult admission is $15 with kids 6-12 $5 and children younger than 6 free when accompanied by a ticketed adult. Parking is free in Rockingham.
On track, VW champions will be crowned in Super Pro (vehicles capable of covering the eighth-mile course in less than 7.50 seconds), Pro ET (for those with eighth-mile times of 7.50 and higher) and Sportsman ET.
