A new apartment complex in Rockingham is accepting applications from seniors.
Magnolia Apartments at 125 Mallard Lane in Rockingham is geared towards senior living. Ages 62 and older can apply to live in the 100 percent handicap accessible building beside the hospital.
Project Superintendent Donald Workman said he is hoping to have the units completed and ready for move-in by September.
“We’re in the finishing stages right now,” said Workman. “We have a few units ready. Now we’re at the point of needing to do a hundred small things to get them ready.”
Walls are up and cabinets are installed. Bathroom fixtures are ready to go. But some units still need things like doorknobs, light switch face-plates and other trimmings.
Each unit comes with a kitchen and dining area. Renters will have the option of plugging in their own washer and dryer, as hook-ups will be available. The building will be up-fitted with a computer room and an exercise room, as well as a laundry room. The building will also have a multi-purpose room with a kitchen.
The second floor has a veranda which will have rocking chairs for seniors to enjoy in the shade, overlooking the parking lot and courtyard area.
The picnic area will have a grill, a covered area and raised brick beds for gardening.
Rental assistance is available for each qualified resident. Residents pay 30 percent of their adjusted gross income towards rent. Deductions are given for medical and utilities.
The building will be equipped with an emergency call system.
According to Community Manager Cynthia Harrell, having bad credit or a criminal record can hold you back from being able to get one of these units.
“I’ve taken 29 applications already,” said Harrell. “I have to do background checks and some have backed out because the units don’t have bathtubs, only showers.”
Harrell is giving a first-come first-serve preference to applicants who apply early; they will get to choose their units.
Harrell said the front door will have a small entrance where guests can step inside. Residents will get a code to punch in, and will have keys to their units. However, guests can call up to the unit from the entrance, and the resident of the unit can press a button that lets them in the front door.
