Earlier this month, Dobbins Heights celebrated its third Community Safe Celebration, with Alcohol & Drug Services and CORRL (Citizens of Richmond for Responsible Living).
According to Dobbins Heights officials, the community came together at the park on Earl Franklin Road in Dobbins Heights, and people from surrounding towns and counties came out. The pool was opened for free swimming, which Angeline David, Dobbins Heights Park and Recreation Commissioner, said was great for the kids.
David organized the basketball tournament, which drew a large number of three-player teams, including a few kids who were too young to play. The tournament was for children 10 years and older. Top Flight was the team that won first place, featuring Jermaine Dawkins, Ron Easterling, Corey Hope and Vonnie Dawkins.
“It was a family event,” said David. “There were all ages there. It was all good, all fun. We gave away two bikes to kids. It was a lot of fun to see the families come out and enjoy themselves.”
David said the Dobbins Heights community is close-knit, and everyone was there. She said people came from Laurinburg as well. Singing groups entertained people, and there was a hair fashion show.
“This group provided a hair show for our Safe Community Celebration which was held on July 14 at the park in Dobbins Height,” said Brenda David of Alcohol & Drug Services. “The salon is called Tri’unity Impressions. The lady who owns it does hair perms and natural hair. She had models with her. She and her sister did all the hair, and the models were there to show what all she can do. She does males as well. She gave out business cards.”
Brenda David said she sees positive changes in the community. She said families were very involved, and teens and young adults were learning about the harmful effects of alcohol and drugs. She said she has seen more young men get involved and wanting to be coaches for basketball teams. She said the State Highway Patrol was at the event, with ‘drunk goggles’ and a golf cart. They set up obstacles and anyone could try to drive it with goggles on.
“Some had no idea how bad it is,” said David. “My son drove it too, so now it’s not just momma talking.”
