The Hamlet Tree and Beautification Group has chosen this Willow Oak as the Tree of the Month for February. The tree grows in the yard at Fellowship United Methodist Church on McDonald Avenue in Hamlet. The lumber from Quercus phellos was used in ship-building and the tannin extracted from the bark was used to tan hides. The Willow Oak is deciduous, which means it drops its leaves in late winter and refoliates in spring.
