On the heels of celebrating its 40 year anniversary, the East Rockingham Men’s Club has announced that the group is trying a fresh spin on fund-raising — a golf tournament.

“We’ve never hosted a golf tournament before, but we’re going to give it a try because our funds are getting low,” said Eddie Byrne, secretary and treasurer. “The more money we can raise, the more we will be able to give out.”

While membership has dropped some over the years, the dedication of the men has not.

In addition to being responsible for the creation of both the East Rockingham Fire Department and East Rockingham Park, the men’s club has continued to raise money for many causes around the county.

They use funds to donate to things like: school supplies for Rohanen Middle School; RSHS cheerleaders; playground equipment; school uniforms to “less fortunate children;” sponsorship of five families at Christmas and Thanksgiving; Christmas parties for “less fortunate children;” aided with the Charles Brownley statue at RSHS; annual sponsorship of a Rockingham baseball team; March of Dimes; Hospice; Make a Wish; aided with the purchase of a therma heat imager helmet for the Hamlet Fire Department; local senior citizen programs; the Richmond County Beautification Committee; scholarships; and the Richmond County Prescription Organization.

“They’re a great group and really give a lot back to this county,” said Lorie Locklear, who volunteered to help organize the golf tournament.

The golf tournament is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 7, and the men’s club is signing up players now.

“We’d like to encourage everyone to go ahead and register,” said Locklear.

The event will kickoff at 8 a.m. at Loch Haven Golf Course, in Rockingham. The four man captain’s choice tourney is $40 per person, which includes a cart, green fees and lunch.

“Businesses can also sponsor a hole for $50,” said Locklear.

First and second place teams will walk away with cash prizes, and there will be a prize for closest to the pin and longest drive.

To register, sponsor a hole or find out more information, contact Lorie Locklear at 910-334-0703 or Eddie Byrne at 910-206-5618.
