Police are investigating what appear to be skeletal remains discovered late Thursday afternoon at the former TNS cotton mill on Lee Street in Rockingham.

According to Rockingham Chief of Police Billy Kelly, an unidentified amateur photographer was at the abandoned mill when he discovered the remains and alerted police.

“He was at the old pump house beside the building taking pictures and looked into the well and saw skeleton remains,” Chief Kelly said. “We’re in the process of trying to recover them.”

The police chief said some clothing was also found among the remains.

At around 11 a.m. Friday, a dive team from Cumberland County was working to recover the bones from the well, according to police.

Also responding to the call was the State Bureau of Investigation and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said they are not yet able to identify the remains, but have alerted a bone specialist in Chapel Hill. It is unclear how long the identification process will take.

“We are still investigating,” Kelly said.
