He has been at the burn unit in at the UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill; but is now home. He is still an outpatient at the hospital.
To help meet his expenses, a benefit event will be held from 11 a.m. Feb. 21 until at the Cordova Fire and Rescue Station, Cordova.
There will be a car wash, and hot dogs, drinks and baked goodson sale.
Smith has a wife and two daughters.
