Richmond Senior High School Principal Cory Satterfield has stepped down from his post and accepted a position as assistant superintendent of Scotland County Schools.
Satterfield’s new position was announced and made official at the Scotland County Board of Education meeting on Monday, where he was approved with a unanimous vote from board members.
He resigned from his position at RSHS on Tuesday; the resignation is effective as of today.
Satterfield will serve as Scotland County’s new assistant superintendent of human resources.
There was recently an assistant superintendent position open in Richmond County, but it was filled by Cindy Goodman, who was an assistant superintendent for Scotland County Schools.
Satterfield said he did apply for the open position in Richmond County.
“I’m working on my doctorate degree now, and this is a wonderful opportunity to advance my career and further my knowledge base in education,” said Satterfield.
Satterfield holds a master’s degree in school administration and curriculum from East Carolina University, and is currently pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership at Wingate University.
“We appreciate Cory Satterfield and all of his efforts to improve student achievement during his time with Richmond County Schools,” said RCS Superintendent George Norris. “Satterfield’s leadership had a lasting impact on Richmond Senior High School and his presence there will be missed. We wish him well as he takes on his new position in Scotland County.”
He served as principal of Richmond Senior High School for six years, and was named the 2010-2011 Sandhills Regional Principal of the Year. During his tenure, Satterfield said the high school saw lower drop-out rates, higher graduation rates and higher attendance.
“Under his leadership, the school received recognition twice as a “School of Distinction” under the state’s ABC’s of accountability model,” said Norris.
“Richmond Senior High School has been moving forward under his leadership, and his leaving is a loss,” said Board of Education Vice Chair Pam Easterling. “Whoever follows him will have big shoes to fill. I know this is a great opportunity for him, and I wish him all the best.”
His ultimate goal is to someday serve as superintendent.
“Change is difficult, but I’m excited to start this new part of my career,” he said.
“Cory wants to progress in his career, and I wish him the best,” said B.O.E. Chair Wiley Mabe. “He has been a great principal for us.”
Richmond County Schools will soon have a vacancy for the position of principal at Richmond Senior High School. The details and qualification requirements have not yet been released.
