ROCKINGHAM — A thunderstorm pounded the area just moments before the initial game of the Pony League’s Bronco Division Piedmont section.
Despite the rough weather, the tournament kicked off at Civitans Park after a 90-minute delay Monday evening.
In the opening contest, Archdale rolled to a 28-0 victory over Anson County in four innings. Josh Scott had two hits and four runs batted in for Archdale, while Coco Jones also had two hits and an RBI.
With the win, Archdale advances to face Garner at 5:30 p.m. today.
In the nightcap, Rockingham led Asheboro 16-0 in the top of the fourth inning. The victor faces Southwest Randolph in the second game tonight.
Rockingham opened the contest by taking advantage of its speed. Through its first two at-bats, Rockingham had 12 stolen bases.
Rockingham scored the game’s first two runs without getting the ball out of the infield. Leadoff hitter Jonathan Lee legged out a bunt single and promptly stole second and third before scoring on a wild pitch. Myles Rohleder followed with a walk, moved to second on an error on a pickoff attempt at first and stole third. Rohleder scored on Jamie Thomas’ ground out to short.
Anson County will return to action at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday against the loser of the Southwest Randolph-Rockingham or Asheboro contest. The loser of the Archdale-Garner game will take on the team which lost Monday’s nightcap at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
