Ernest Marion Meekins, Jr., 83, of Norwood passed away peacefully on Tuesday evening, July 3, 2012.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00PM, Sunday July 8, 2012 at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Norwood. Rev. Ron Honeycutt will officiate. The family will greet friends prior to the service from 1:00 until 2:00 at Edwards Funeral Home in Norwood.

Ernest was born August 22, 1928 in Marion, SC to Ernest Marion Meekins and Maude Hayes Meekins. He graduated from Laurel Hill High School where he was an avid athlete. He served in the US Navy on the US Mississippi and was honorably discharged in 1948. As a young boy he was an Eagle Scout. He was an active member of the Laurinburg Jaycees and Civitan Clubs. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Laurinburg, NC. Ernest worked for the US Postal Service for 30 plus years before retiring in 1989 to his beloved Lake Tillery. He was an avid boater and fisherman who enjoyed every day on Lake Tillery – rain or shine!

Ernest is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 62 years, Miriam Currie Meekins, his daughter, Gail M. Roberts and husband, Doug of Winston-Salem and his two wonderful grandsons, David Mackenzie Roberts of Winston-Salem and Jonathan Alexander Roberts of Crested Butte, Colorado. Ernest was predeceased by his parents Ernest and Maude Meekins, sisters Evangeline Meekins and Ruby Porter.

Ernest, a gentle generous man, always had time for anyone at any time and will be missed by his countless friends and family. Primarily, Ernest was a family man whose world was dedicated to his wife, daughter and his beloved grandchildren. Whether vacations or weekends visit he looked forward to his family and his grandsons more than anything else.
