ROCKINGHAM — For six youth baseball teams the first steps in the journey to Monterey, Calif. begin in Rockingham.
The Pony League’s Bronco Divison Piedmont Section will start play 5:30 p.m. Monday at Civitans Park when Anson County battles Archdale. The section winner will advance to the region tournament which is slated for July 17 in Charlotte. The Bronco Division is for 11- and 12-year-olds.
Teams have to fight through section, region and zone competitions before earning a spot in August’s World Series in Monterey.
Rockingham’s squad will take the field in Monday’s nightcap versus Asheboro. Garner, last season’s section champion, and Southwest Randolph received first-round byes and will begin play on Tuesday against Monday’s winners. Garner will face either Anson County or Archdale, while Southwest Randolph will take on the Rockingham-Asheboro survivor.
“The tournament will feature the best players in the Piedmont area,” said Vernon Ford, the tournament director. “I’m not sure how good some of the other teams are, but I think there will be some tough battles.”
The competition will continue through Friday. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children 6 to 12 years of age.
Rockingham’s Bronco All-Stars is not the organization’s only team in action. The Pinto squad will begin its region tournament Saturday in Garner. The region winner will move on to Super Region which starts on July 13 in High Point.
The Mustang All-Stars will take on Southwest Randolph in its opening-round contest 6 p.m. Monday in High Point. The section champion will advance to the region tournament on July 17 in Charlotte.
Rockingham’s softball representatives will also hit the diamond as well in their Dixie Youth competitions. The Ponytail All-Stars will return to action Friday in Troy, while the Angels squad will take to the field on July 13 in Eden.
